❕❕A couple of unexpected moments this week:
❤️A ruby-throated hummingbird got tangled in a spiderweb in our garage after mistakingly flying inside at dusk. She was scared but not hurt. After a few minutes of resting in our hand, she flew off into the dark night. In the grainy photo, you can still see a tiny bit of web stuck to the end of her beak.
🐾 A cat was stumbling slowly around a farm with a chip bag completely suctioned over his face. We spotted this as we were driving past. Perplexed, we threw the car in reverse to check out the scene. After a few hard tugs (it was on tight!), the bag was removed so he could see and he scampered away again.

We love helping little critters whenever we can. That’s our mission! ☺️🌏

Soooo maybe Duck duck (our affectionate name for A Soooo maybe Duck duck (our affectionate name for Asteroid) doesn’t have fancy going-back-to-school photos like the rest of the kids but sometimes we like to pretend. 📸

Here are photos of all the best angles because she loves to be hilarious. We’ve got: Gorgeous extra long beak, flappy wide feet, fluffy behind in her drinking water dish, the pre-rescue baby pic! 🧡

You’re a #1 student in our eyes, Ducky, and your job is to just be you. Flesh, eggs, feathers- they are not ours to use because you are a living breathing individual. 🌱

We are looking forward to her new custom coop arriving next month, courtesy of a very philanthropic donor. 😍 🛖

The letter C is for Compassion, Critters, and… C The letter C is for Compassion, Critters, and… Can you believe the humidity?! These days are certainly feeling a little more sticky and slow. We are taking a brief moment to enjoy the native flora and fauna around Mystery Meadows. Today’s letter C is proudly brought to you by one of our very own resident monarch caterpillars (and unfortunately, corn sweat)! 🐛🌽 🥵

🪶 🪶‼️ We have a much needed update for y 🪶 🪶‼️ We have a much needed update for you! These four little chicks came to us from a kind family who lovingly raised them for their first week of life but ultimately decided they weren’t equipped to keep them long-term. After a full 30-day quarantine, the chicks were ready to join our flock and to meet Figaro, one of our resident bantam roosters.

Figaro had been uneasy in his coop since his special Cornish Cross companion Grace passed unexpectedly in early May. 😔 For the first time in his life, he was alone. We kept telling him, “Don’t worry, we’ve rescued new friends for you. You won’t be alone forever.”

And now, he’s no longer alone! Since day one, Figaro has kept a close eye on the chicks by tidbitting, posturing, herding, and making sure they know who’s in charge (while pretending not absolutely, positively, totally smitten). 🐓💛

At 6 weeks old, the chicks are now fully feathered, roosting, dust bathing, and already taking treats right from Figaro’s beak. They’re finding their place in the flock and surprisingly he’s easy claimed them as his own.

It’ll be a soft, sweet new beginning for all five of them. 🖤

✨ Meet Asteroid from Cicero ✨ A 4-week-old Pek ✨ Meet Asteroid from Cicero ✨
A 4-week-old Pekin duck who almost slipped through the cracks.

Bought as an Easter gift, likely for a child, then quickly discarded, Asteroid was left behind, dirty, hungry, and entirely alone.

But she didn’t disappear.
We rescued her.
Now safe in quarantine at our 501(c)3 sanctuary, she’s warm, fed, and slowly learning that she matters.

We named her Asteroid because she didn’t fall, she collided with a system that treated her like a novelty, and broke free.

🌀 She’s soft, vocal, determined cosmic force in a little feathered body.

🦆 We’ve set up new quarantine housing, food, and supplies just for her but she’ll need more.
👉 Vet care, long-term food, dipping pond, enrichment, and eventually another duck companion (because ducks are never meant to be alone).

💛 Donations help cover her immediate needs, care, and future.
We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit & all gifts are tax-deductible.

💸 Donate via Venmo or PayPal: @mysterymeadows

📍From Cicero to sanctuary.
Asteroid’s journey reminds us: no one is disposable.
